What we do

Each month we have a speaker on a military related subject followed by a discussion around that subject or related topics. Many of our speakers are published authors and professional historians. We also provide speakers for other groups.

Our informality is renowned and you are guaranteed a lively discussion afterwards with our mix of professional historians and enthusiastic amateurs!

Previous meetings have included a wide range of topics, some of which are  listed here.

Check the home page for forthcoming meetings or join our mailing list on  this link

Where we meet.

We meet at the East Manchester History and Gaming Centre, Knivton Street, Godley, Hyde, SK14 2PU. Click here for the exact location. We are an informal group united by a common interest in military history. All are welcome regardless of age, sex or ethnicity. There is a small admission charge of £5 per lecture to cover venue rental costs or you can save money by taking out an annual membership for £36.

Need a Speaker?

Over the years, key members of the Society have presented talks on topics near to their heart or that they have a special interest in; we are now making these available to other groups and societies who may wish to share in our members’ knowledge. If your group or society would like to discuss booking one of our speakers, please contact us via any of the methods on this link.

Our History

MMHS is a continuation of the Manchester Tactical Society founded by Spenser Wilkinson in the 1880s while a journalist with the Manchester Guardian.

The Manchester Tactical Society was briefly resurrected between 1968 and 1975, however it was reconstituted more recently by the late Paddy Griffith in 1999 as The South Manchester Tactical Society. The Society changed its name to the Manchester Military History Society in 2013.
